Huge Fireball Likely Large Meteor That May Have Left Debris.
The object, which lit up the sky shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday across parts of Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin, was very likely a piece of an asteroid, a rocky planetoid formation that orbits the sun, he said. Almost all meteors come from asteroids.
It almost certainly was not from debris trailing a comet or part of a meteor shower associated with a comet, as earlier reports have speculated, Hammergren said.
"We won't know for sure until we get specimens" of whatever the object was, if pieces of it survived the fiery plunge through the Earth's atmosphere, he said. But it was so large, he said he was fairly certain some may be found. Technically, if pieces of a meteor survive the impact, they are known as "meteorites."
There was no "space junk" satellite debris that would have de-orbited into the atmosphere over that part of the U.S. Wednesday night, said William Ailor, director of the Center for Orbital and Reentry Debris Studies at the Aerospace Corporation in California, ruling out that it could have been a piece of an old satellite.
According to the weather service's Milwaukee office, officials there, in LaCrosse, Wis., Davenport and Des Moines, Iowa, and in St. Louis and Kansas City, Mo. received "numerous reports of a fireball" about the same time people began contacting Milwaukee area officials about the flare.
National Weather Service radar in LaCrosse, Wis. showed the object at between 6,000 and 12,000 feet, heading from northwest to southeast over Grant and Iowa counties.
(The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences has a series of time lapse photos of the event as seen from Madison; an Iowa sheriff's department captured video of the flash that's been posted on YouTube.)
Christine McMorris was in her Woodstock home Wednesday evening looking out of her kitchen window as she washed dishes and talked with a friend when she noticed a bright light coming from the sky.
"All of a sudden out of the corner of my eye, I saw this huge ball of fire and a huge light,'' said McMorris. "I was like, what the hell was that?"
She had seen many shooting stars during her travels to the western United States. But last night put those to shame, she said.
"They are minuscule compared to this, it was enormous,'' she said.
She said as the meteor traveled closer to the surface, its intensity diminished until she lost sight of it during the approximately five to 10 seconds it took to drop. She said it didn't have a tail.
"It was truly spectacular,'' she said.
Becky Hoffman, who lives on a farm near Dixon, said she and her husband were getting ready for bed when they looked out and saw a "big glow" in the sky. She found it strange because the air was clear of storm clouds. She said she is about an hour and a half from the Wisconsin border and noticed the light north of her home.
"We thought it might have been a transformer blowing up in the area,'' she said, but she dismissed it because she did not hear any explosions.
She said it was a reddish orange glow to it and she didn't think anything of it until she turned on the radio this morning and heard that it was a meteor.
"That's what it was, I saw it,'' said Hoffman. "I thought it was pretty exciting, I just want to know where it ended up at. Did it disintegrate into the skyline or did it actually hit ground?"
In a statement on its Web site, the National Weather Service office in the Quad Cities said:
"Just after 10 pm CDT Wednesday evening April 14th, a fireball or very bright meteor was observed streaking across the sky. The fireball was seen over the northern sky, moving from west to east.
"Well before it reached the horizon, it broke up into smaller pieces and was lost from sight. The fireball was seen across Northern Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Southern Wisconsin. Several reports of a prolonged sonic boom were received from areas north of Highway 20, along with shaking of homes, trees and various other objects including wind chimes. As of late Wednesday evening, it is unknown whether any portion of this meteorite hit the ground."
Hammergren said the apparently large size of the meteor indicates pieces may well have survived and hit the ground.
"The strength of this was comparable to others where multiple fragments have been recovered, he said, guessing that as a meteor prior to hitting and exploding in the atmosphere may have weighed "hundreds of pounds".
Similarly sized meteors have produced meteorite fragments from the size of grains of sand to fist size and football-sized chunks.
Meteorites are so highly prized by scientists, collectors and dealers, that teams of searchers already are preparing to go to an area in southwest Wisconsin where fragments most likely would have crashed into the ground, he said.

Eek!ocide Secular Apostate
The Latin -cide is used in many compound words to mean killer or act of killing. Obvious examples are suicide, homicide, genocide, matricide, etc. In fact, the first crime in the book of Genesis was homicide (or fratricide, take your pick) when Cain killed his brother, Abel.
In all of these variations of -cide, there is one common element: a dead body (or bodies).
But in our Progressive postmodern world, one should not be surprised to find that the eek!olawyers are attempting to redefine this most ancient of crimes. According to The Guardian, an extreme Left British newspaper whose readership tends to broadcast in the psychotic band of the Progressive spectrum, a new -cide ecocide is waiting in the wings for a police state to enforce it:
The proposal for the United Nations to accept ecocide as a fifth crime against peace, which could be tried at the International Criminal Court (ICC), is the brainchild of British lawyer-turned-campaigner Polly Higgins.
Although most of us have seen a dead body, and, barring unusual circumstances, its fairly easy to tell whether a body is in fact dead or not, I have never seen a dead eco. In fact, I have never seen an eco at all. Ecos, like unicorns, seem to appear only to a select few of the most committed acolytes of the Church of Gaia.
Consider, for example, the concept of ecosystem. I can easily understand the planet as a system. Its not a closed system, of course, as it has many external inputs. But one can more or less draw a reasonable line at the outer limit of the exosphere. But with other ecosystems, its difficult to draw a line, is it not? For example, where are the limits of Pacific Northwest ecosystem? At best, one must draw a very, very fuzzy line. So is the Gobi Desert inside or outside the Pacific Northwest ecosystem? In 1998, the Asian Dust Event affected atmospheric aerosols and left chemical fingerprints as far east as Minnesota. The winds that blow over the Gobi, by and large, eventually end up over Seattle. Inside? Outside? Well, it depends, doesnt it?
In reality, the limits of ecosystems depend on, and are normally assigned for, legislative and legal reasons. The notion of a hard and fast system limit, delineating what is inside and outside the system, simply doesnt fit with the fuzzy, interlocked realities of nature. But it is a necessary scientistic (i.e., the appearance, or illusion, of scientific validity and reliability) fiction for the assignment of liability, regulatory efforts, and propaganda purposes.
And the propaganda purposes are extremely important, as we see from the Guardian article:
Supporters of a new ecocide law also believe it could be used to prosecute climate deniers who distort science and facts to discourage voters and politicians from taking action to tackle global warming and climate change.
After all, the eek!opolice need something to do between five-alarm spasms of gallivanting about the planet to find dead minnows.
Once one invents a crime, one needs a means of enforcing compliance and punishing breach. The UN is obviously the perfect place to pitch this ecocide insanity, and guess what:
After a successful launch at the UN in 2008, the idea has been adopted by the Bolivian government, who will propose a full members vote, and Higgins has taken up her campaign for ecocide.
This would be the same Bolivian government run by the narco-dictator Evo Morales, comrade-in-arms with Hugo Chavez and the Castro brothers. All of whom have excellent credentials in enforcement and organizing police states.
And what better court to try cases than the ICC in the Hague? The Heritage Foundation observes that
[T]he system of legal due processes adopted by the ICC differs radically from the due process guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution. [ital added -ed.]
Is that just perfect for a police state, or what? They go on to say
The right to trial by jury is conspicuously absent. Justice Joseph Story wrote in 1833 that the purpose of explicit constitutional guarantees of trial by jury was to secure the party accused from being dragged to a trial in some distant state, away from his friends, and witnesses, and neighborhood; and thus subjected to the verdict of mere strangers, who may feel no common sympathy, or who may even cherish animosities, or prejudices against him. If the security of basic legal rights cannot be entrusted to the integrity of elected and appointed American judges, how much more should the U.S. be wary of democratically unaccountable foreign judges who are uninhibited by constitutional restraints?
Even the Chinese are wary of the ICC and refuse to join. And its clearly not because the Chinese government is morally above torture and indefinite incarceration for thought crimes. Maybe they just dont like kangaroos.
Anyway, the notion of ecocide obviously appeals to the dictators and would-be dictators among us who fear public disagreement because it has such fuzzy dimensions and infinite elasticity. Is pissing on the fencepost ecocide? Well, I dunno. Lets ask the representative from Zimbabwe.
But there should be a real crime prosecutable in the Court of Public Opinion, and Im going to call it eek!ocide.
And, as I will show you, there are real dead bodies to be found.
The most egregious eek!ocide ever committed was the brainchild of Rachel Carson and the match that ignited the Gaian religion.
Rachel Carson wrote a book called The Silent Spring which purported to prove that all the birds were dying because of DDT. Gullible people, including myself, sucked up this heartrending argument and began to fear the Silence of the Meadowlarks. All those joyful little feathered bodies quivering in their death throes and it was going to be my fault.
But things really took off in America when the claim emerged that the iconic American megafauna, the Bald Eagle, was being threatened by DDT. The chain of reasoning that led to the doorstep of eagle aeries was work done by the US government. This research was similar in quality to the governments rain follows the plow settled science that resulted in the American Dust Bowl and the brilliant introduction of kudzu into the Southeastern states.
Joel Bitman, PhD, Dept of Agriculture scientist, and physiological chemist, did some work with quail purporting to show that DDT in the diet of quail resulted in thinner eggshells. This work was published in two major journals, Nature and the AAASs Science. Bitman, no longer a bit-man, had hit the big-time. But lest you think that peer review shenanigans were a recent symptom of the global warming cult, note that Bitman was forced by criticism to acknowledge that his experimental quail diets had actually manipulated two variables. His quail with the thin eggshells were also on a restricted calcium diet. Well, whodathunkit?
But the science was so settled that when Bitman courageously published an article recanting his previously published data, the only venue he could find to squeeze by the peer review process was the journal Poultry Science. Now theres a journal thats on the tip of everyones tongue, eh? Back to being a bit-man, as it were. Nature and Science wouldnt touch it because well, you figure that out for yourself. According to Dr Thomas Jukes (UC-Berkeley), Sciences editor, Dr Phil Abelson, told Jukes he would never publish anything that was not antagonistic toward DDT.
body
Since the religious jihad against DDT really took off with the EPAs ban on the chemical during the Nixon Administration, literally tens of millions of people have died worldwide from malaria. And that doesnt even count other insect-borne disease. Thats just malaria. There are real bodies to be found. Of course, the bodies have been in picturesquely poverty-stricken developing countries and not in the effete salons of Manhattan, DC, and San Francisco.
Steve Milloy calls it a Legacy of Death. Why not call it eek!ocide?

Boston Red Sox Vs Minnesota Twins – 1st Ever Game At Target Field.
Itll be a historic day in Minnesota, as the Twins will play their first ever game in the brand new Target Field. But can the visiting Boston Red Sox spoil the fun in Monday afternoons betting odds?
Boston Red Sox (3-3 SU, 3-3 R/L, 4-2 O/U) at Minnesota Twins (5-2 SU, 4-3 R/L, 2-4-1 O/U)
Monday, April 12: 4:10 p.m.ESPN
Boston: -1 , +120, -130
(Jon Lester-L)
Minnesota: +1 , -140, +110
(Carl Pavano-R)
Over 9 Runs: -110
Under 9 Runs: -110
Boston comes into this game having won two of three in Kansas City. However, for those that expected this team to be focused on pitching and defense, theyve been in for a bit of a rude awakening. The Red Sox credo all winter long was to improve in those two areas, but it was actually their offense which carried them in Kansas City. Just in the last two games of the series, the Red Sox scored 16 runs off 24 hits. Pint-sized second baseman Dustin Pedroia already has four home runs on the young season.
Heading to the hill on Monday afternoon will be Jon Lester, who struggled quite a bit in his first start of 2010 against the Yankees last Tuesday. In the game, the left handed Lester allowed five hits and four earned runs over five innings, ultimately ending up with a no-decision in a 6-4 loss. Hell need a better effort Monday.
As for Minnesota, the long awaited day has finally arrived. No longer are the Twins forced to play their games in the dimly lit, un-ascetically pleasing Metro Dome, but now have spacious and exciting outdoor digs in downtown Minneapolis.
After a six game road trip to start the season, Minnesota heads into this one having won five of their last six games. On the young season, superstar catcher Joe Mauer has already proved to be the player Minnesota expected him to be when they signed him to a monstrous contract extension in the off-season. He is hitting .381 with a home run, four RBI and six runs scored early on in the season. Former MVP Justin Morneau is also playing well with two home runs and six RBI.
On the mound will be the controversial, but somewhat effective Carl Pavano. Although Pavano was hardly a hit during his days in New York, hes proven effective in Minnesota, as he won five games down the stretch for the Twins after being traded from Cleveland late last year. He followed that up with an impressive opening game against the Angels last Wednesday, pitching seven innings and allowed just one earned run.
When looking at this game, you can factor in a million different things, but the most important is simply emotion and excitement, something there will be no short supply of at Target Field on Monday afternoon.
Twins fans have been waiting for this day for years, and expect them to come out in full bore and cheer on their team.
Minnesota isnt going to go undefeated over the course of the season at Target Field, we all know that. But they arent going to lose their opener either.

Itll be a historic day in Minnesota as the Twins will play their first ever game in the brand new Target Field.
Target Field is a baseball park located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is the home of the Minnesota Twins, the citys Major League Baseball franchise. It is the franchises sixth ballpark since its start as the Washington Senators in 1901, and the Twins third in Minnesota after 28 seasons at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. It is the first facility built specifically for the Twins, as Metropolitan Stadium was open four years before the Twins came to Minnesota and had been used by a minor league baseball team, while the Metrodome was built as a multipurpose stadium for the Twins and the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League.
The Twins received the certificate of occupancy from Mortensen Construction, the ballparks general contractor on December 22, 2009. Their first day of operations at the new facility was January 4, 2010.
The first game at the ballpark took place on March 27, 2010, with a college baseball game between the University of Min
