What’s Alan Watching?: Lost, "everybody Loves Hugo": Throw The.

"Whoa. Dude." -Hurley

Well, we're clearly cooking with gas at this point in the season. Desmond's return has goosed the narrative stakes in both the sideways universe and the real one, two of the three island factions have finally come together(*), stuff blew up left and right(**), Des and Locke are trying to kill each other in the two timelines, and the sideways world again was used well to bring back a character whose time on the show felt like it came to too abrupt an end in the real timeline.

(*) Albeit in an episode that saw the creation of another faction in the Richard/Ben/Miles group, since groups on "Lost" are forever picking sides and walking off, going all the way back to when Jack took half the Oceanic survivors into the caves back in season one.

(**) Albeit with explosions that continued this season's trend of unimpressive CGI work. Whatever cuts ABC's made in the show's budget the last couple of years, the digital FX department has definitely been a big victim.

My fear, though, is that it's taken us too long to get to this point.

In the early years of the show, a "Lost" episode and a "Lost" season tended to be constructed the same way: an exciting beginning, then a lot of narrative throat-cleaning, and then an exciting finish. Once Cuse and Lindelof got permission to set an end date and knew what they were moving towards, seasons 4 and 5 became much denser, both from week to week and over the course of each season. Season 6, on the other hand, has felt like a throwback, not just with the return of old characters like Charlie and Boone and, now, Libby, but with the way that we're heading into the home stretch with material that it feels the show would have been better-served to deal with sooner.

Though some of the early sideways stories were entertaining through the sheer force of personality of the actors/characters being spotlighted (Locke, Ben), there was nothing all that interesting about the sideways world itself until last week. By making Desmond aware of the wrongness of the world - and introducing other characters like Charlie and Faraday who also recognized this - we finally tied that world to the one we care about, and created some urgency to our visits to LA. But I'd have rather see this happen a few weeks into the season and not now, not only because it would have given greater purpose to some of those meandering flash-sideways stories like Jack's son or Jin's amazing adventure in the freezer, but because it feels like now that we have a sideways story arc (Desmond tries to nudge the Oceanic passengers into realizing that this world isn't right), the resolution of it is going to feel rushed.

But Cuse and Lindelof have earned some trust over these past few years. Even if I didn't love a lot of the first half of this season, I want to believe that they know just how much time they need to tell the remaining story, that even if "What Kate Does" hasn't retroactively gotten better, that we're heading towards a finish close to what a series this great deserves. Because I don't want the season to turn into one big dead end like Ilana ultimately was.(***)

(***) Even in death, Ilana amounted to little, as Arzt beat her to that particular punchline by five years. The Ajira crew ultimately added about as much to the series' larger mythos as the tailies - Richard or Jacob's ghost could have very easily explained the candidate thing with just as much detail as Ilana ever offered - and the tailies at least gave us Libby's romance with Hurley and Mr. Eko and his Jesus stick for entertainment value.

And in the meantime, Desmond's actions, as well as the resurrected Libby's awareness of her other too-brief life, gave Hurley's sideways story some juice, along with giving Jorge Garcia another chance to show he has far more to offer the series than comic relief.

In sideways world, Hurley's a man who seemingly has everything (his version of the happy ending deal all the island folk apparently got) but is incredibly lonely. In the real world, he's lost so many people while standing on the sidelines that he once again asserts himself and takes a surprising leadership role on the island. (And Jack, finally after all these years learning that he can't fix everything, seems okay with playing Hurley's sidekick for once, in a nice role reversal and good moment for the character.)

Garcia had a lot of good moments in this one, but my favorite came early on, when he tells Ilana that Libby was "murdered," and this tone of pained disbelief comes into his voice as he says the word. One of Hurley's most recognizable traits is his ability to discuss the most ridiculous events of the series in the most matter-of-fact tone, but with his delivery of that one word, Garcia makes it clear just how much this one particular event continues to rock his world, years later.

Libby's return didn't explain what she was doing in the mental hospital in the real world, and I suppose that's one mystery I can live without them explaining. But I'm hoping we'll get more of Cynthia Watros in the coming weeks, along with more Dominic Monaghan and Jeremy Davies and even Ian Somerhalder. Because if alt-Desmond's mission is to bring an end to sideways world so the real world can be saved, a bunch of people are going to have to accept that they're going to die again, and there's a lot of good material to be mined there - assuming there's both time and available actors for that.

As for the Locke/Desmond mutual attempted murder game going on in both timelines, I'm not assuming either real Des or alt-Locke are dead just yet. Desmond's fall down the electromagnetic well is one of those classic comic book-style "if you don't see a dead body, you don't have a dead character" moments, and alt-Locke is still breathing (and looking remarkably like Locke on the ground after his father threw him out the window in "The Man from Tallahassee"). I am curious, though, if alt-Desmond has a specific reason for targeting our poor, self-actualized substitute teacher - perhaps recognizing that damaging Smokey's host body in the sidways world hurts him in the real one - or if alt-Des is going more by instinct, and somehow knows in his gut that the man with John Locke's face has just tried to hurt him.

Anyway, we'll have more time to speculate on all of that once I'm working full-time again (and less sleep-deprived), so in the meantime, some other thoughts:

&bull Couple of notable guest stars this week: Samm Levine (from my beloved "Freaks and Geeks" had a brief appearance as the Mr. Cluck's employee who recognizes Hurley (and I thank the "Lost" producers for giving him more dialogue than Quentin Tarantino did in all of "Inglourious Basterds"), Bruce Davison reprises his role from season two's "Dave" as Dr. Brooks.

So the whispers were the voices of all the souls trapped on the island because of the actions they committed there while alive. On the one hand, that's not a surprising answer; on the other, that's sort of the risk Cuse and Lindelof face in giving us answers to questions like that at this late date. After six years of speculation, of course most of us are going to have come up with an idea like this to describe the whispers, just as I'm sure the identities of Adam and Eve will wind up being something that's already mentioned on Lostpedia. But by tying the answer to a character moment - Michael asking Hurley to apologize to Libby for him - the revelation merited more than a shrug.

I swear, every time a character with a gun talks about getting in an outrigger (here it was Richard), I turn into Millhouse in "The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show" whining, "When are they gonna get to the fireworks factory?!?!?!?!"

Another possible "Lost" spin-off: a game show called "How Do You Break the Ice with the Smoke Monster, Anyway?"

What did everybody else think?

Kulturblog Lost: happily Ever After

Desmonds life has not exactly been a fairy tale. But I always like Desmond-centric episodes.

Ill discuss this and other ideas from tonights episode below.

Links and miscellanea

  • Long-time Lost supporter Jimmy Kimmel will host a special following the series finale of Lost.
  • Think Geek has a very cool (and very geeky, of course) DHARMA Initiative alarm clock based on the Swan hatchs infamous countdown clock.
  • Lost Slapdown, part 9:

Observations and speculations

  • The episodes opening shot shows an eye in extreme close up, as weve seen so many times before, but this time its Desmonds eye. And hes back on the island, but he doesnt know it yet.
  • Widmore shows up to tell Desmond that he was shot by Ben Linus, and that Penny and little Charlie are safe, somewhere. He also explainsprovoking a violent reaction from Desmondthat hes brought Desmond back to the island and that the island is not done with you yet, a repeat of what Eloise Hawking told Desmond in the Lamp Post Station at the end of last season.
  • The action moves to the Generator Room, where dorky looking Team Widmore member complains about not being ready for the test. He has a white rabbit (a familiar Lost motif) in a cage. This particular rabbits name is Angstrom, probably a reference to Anders Jonas Angstrom, a Swedish physicist who studied, among other things, terrestrial magnetism.
  • The test has to do with generating an E. M. field, an electromagnetic field. Simmons gets fried during the test, but he had the manner of a redshirt anyway, and no one seems overly concerned about Simmons, least of all Widmore.
  • After Widmores men tie Desmond to a chair inside the electro-magnetic experimentation shack, one of them asks Desmond, You dont have any metal on you, do you? Keys, change? This question is repeated later in the episode before Desmond undergoes an MRI in St. Sebastian Hospital in LA-X. The shack is something like a giant, lethal MRI, in a way.
  • Widmore tells Desmond that, in addition to being forcefully subjected to the electro-magnetic forces that just made Simmons look like the charred remains one typically finds in a Drivers Ed film, Desmond will later be asked to make a sacrifice. What this sacrifice is, exactly, isnt clear. My guess would be that he must give up his life with Penny and their son, Charlie.
  • Widmore says, My son died here, for the sake of this island. In case you forgot (and I almost did), the son being referred to here is Daniel Faraday, son of Charles Widmore and Eloise Hawking. He also tells Desmond that unless he helps (by agreeing to make a sacrifice), Penny, your son, and everyone else will be gone, forever.
  • A little later, Widmore tells Jin that Desmond is the only person I am aware of in the world who has survived a catastrophic electromagnetic event. I need to know that he can do it again. Or we all die. Apparently, Widmores plan involves setting off another purple sky incident, with Desmond at its center.
  • As the experiment proceeds, we see a white out like the one we saw ending season five.
  • In LA-X, and at LAX, Desmond interacts with Hurley and Claire. As Desmond tells Claire that he thinks shes having a boy, Im pretty sure we can see Cindy, the flight attendant (and, on the island, former Other and newly recruited member of the Black Team) wheeling her luggage.
  • George, the driver is none other than George Minkowski, the communications officer from the freighter. Hes much more laid back in this iteration. But then, hes not suffering from fatal, island-induced nosebleeds.
  • Its not terribly surprising that Desmond is working for Widmore in LA-X. Still, its somewhat jarring to see these two characters on such good terms.
  • A couple of interesting items in Widmores LA-X office: first, a painting showing a set of scales balancing white stones and black stones. We saw just such a set of balances in Jacobs sea cave. Second, there is a model boat that reminds us of the Elizabeth, the sail boat that Desmond got from Libby and sailed to the island.
  • In LA-X, the Widmore clan is more or less intact, with Daniel (f/k/a Faraday) Widmore working as a musician rather than a scientist. Recall that Eloise Hawking required Daniel to give up music knowing that Daniel needed to devote his life to physics and mathematics so that he could play an important role on the island, all the while knowing that his fate was to be shot and killed before her eyes.
  • In Widmores office, Widmore cracks open the 60-year-old MacCutcheons scotch and pours a glass for Desmond, telling him, Nothings too good for you. This is the opposite of what Widmore tells Desmond in the episode, Flashes Before Your Eyes, where Widmore tells him that he is unworthy of drinking his whiskey because hell never be great.
  • Incidentally, there really is a California Superior Court called the airport courthouse, but it looks nothing like the one where Desmond goes to collect Charlie.
  • Charlies behaving strangely. We come to find out that his apparently suicidal actions have to do with some seriously existential doubt in the reality of the LA-X world. Charlie believes that in some other reality, he is in love with a beautiful, blonde lady (presumably Claire), and that when he almost died choking on his stash during the Oceanic 815 flight, he was given a glimpse of that other reality.
  • I found it amusing that Charlie, when hes telling his story to Desmond, refers to Jack as a sodding idiot.
  • Desmond tells Charlie, Theres always a choice, brother, which is similar to either something Not-Locke said, or something Jacob said in a recent episode (possibly both).
  • When Charlie causes Desmond to drive his car into the harbor, the scene is eerily reminiscent of Charlies death scene at the Looking Glass, even before Desmond starts to hallucinate.
  • Do we know the doctor who attends to Desmond after the accident?
  • I liked that before Desmond is put in the MRI, he is given the button. Desmond, it seems, is doomed to be always pushing buttons.
  • Jacks line, Wait, he was on our plane, and now hes here in the hospital? was kind of funny. Just a little bit.
  • Charlie, running through the hospital in a patient gown because of existential panic is kind of funny, too.
  • When Desmond arrives at the site of the charity event to inform Eloise Widmore that Drive Shafts bassist is not going to be able to make it, Daniel Widmore is playing Chopins Fantasie-Impromptu in C-Sharp Minor, the same musical piece that Jacks son played at his audition in Jacks LA-X flash sideways.
  • Theres something about Eloise. She always seems to know so much more about whats going on than those around her. This was the case when we first saw her on Flashes Before Your Eyes (episode 3.08) and also when she instructed the Oceanic survivors on returning to the island in 316 (episode 5.06). In this episode, Eloise again seems more lucid than the other characters. She seems to be aware of the alternate timelines and the implications of Desmonds interest in Penny.
  • Penny is listed on the guest list as Milton, Pennysolo. Daniel (Faraday) Widmore refers to Penny as his half-sister. So who is Milton (other than the English poet of which I wrote about a few weeks back)? Who is Pennys mother, and why has she not taken her fathers surname?
  • Eloise is not at all bothered by the fact that Drive Shaft wont be attending her event. What happened, happened, she says, repeating a line used earlier this year, also the name of an episode last season.
  • Eloise (Hawking) Widmore tells Desmond, Someone has clearly affected the way you see things. This is a serious problem. It is, in fact, a violation. Apparently, there are rules which govern the LA-X universe, and someonein this case, Charliehas violated those rules. Where did these rules come from? Was there some sort of deal entered into by the people who exist in LA-X?
  • Eloise also gives a clue to the secret of the LA-X existence: Desmond has the one thing he wants most of all, Mr. Widmores approval. But the only reason he would want it is so that he can have Widmores blessing in marrying Penny. LA-X universe appears to be full of monkeys paw scenarios, where the characters are granted their wish, but at the cost of something dear to them. Desmond has Widmores approval, but not Penny. Sayid has Nadia safe, but cannot ever be intimate with her. Etc.
  • When Eloise tells Desmond that hes not ready yet, thats a bit of a head-scratcher. Does she mean that hes not ready yet to find out about Penny? Or that hes not ready yet to understand why he cant know about Penny?
  • In LA-X, Daniel still has the skinny tie, but he chooses to further accessorize it with a really dorky fedora.
  • Daniel proceeds to tell Desmond about how he fell in love with Charlotte Lewis at first sight, though he doesnt name her. The museum she works at is apparently the same one for which Eloise Widmore is putting together a charity event. Daniel is also able to deduce, because of his genius, that in some other possible universe, he has already detonated a nuclear bomb. Man, wish I was that kind of smart.
  • Daniel mentions that when he first sees Charlotte, shes eating a chocolate bar. She was also eating a chocolate bar when Charlotte, the child, met the crazy older man Daniel on the island in 1977.
  • All of the main characters, each of the main Oceanic survivors who have had a flash sideways, plus Charlie, Daniel and Desmond in this episode, have felt the vague deja vu that signals this LA-X universe as being not-quite reality. That feeling is coming more into focus now, especially with what we learned tonight. And maybe, just maybe, it has something to do with love.
  • Desmond meets Penny in the same stadium that he met Jack, only this time its Penny whos running steps. When Penny shakes his hand, he faintsand we cut to the Island, where Desmond gains consciousness. The two events appear to be inter-realted. Desmond is the only character who seems capable of these kind of intertwined flashes, as weve seen before.
  • When Desmond awakens on the island following Team Widmores eletro-magnetic experiment, he seems filled with a sense of purpose, and willing to follow fate. He doesnt particularly mind if hes following Widmore or Sayidhes at peace with his fate in either event.
  • No one snaps a neck like Sayid. And Black Smoke Deadened Sayid seems incapable of recognizing the irony of a man who has just murdered another man with his bare hands saying, These people are extremely dangerous.
  • Desmond asks Minkowski to get the Oceanic 815 flight manifest and when Minkowski asks him why, he replies, I just need to show them something. Some antecedents would be nice. Show who what? Show the Oceanic 815 passengers something? It seems so.

I enjoyed this episode, probably more than I would have expected if someone had told me that 95% of it takes place in LA-X. Still, Id like to get back to the island and find out what Desmond will be doing there, and what Team Widmore is really up to. One way or another, were going to find out in the remaining episodes.

What did yall think of this episode? Worthy of Desmond?

Countdown To Lost: ‘what Kate Does’ And ‘what Doc Missed’

Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it.

We are hours away from the arrival of the third episode of Losts last season, a Kate-centric affair entitled What Kate Does. Thats right, you heard me: third episode. Even though this is only week two, last weeks two-hour premiere counted as two episodes. Which means that after tonight, we will already be finished with 1/6th of the season. Holy Smokey! And it feels like the season only began last week. Waitwhat?!

My mind is still reeling in a good way from what we got out of LA X. The premiere inspired a wide range of reactions mostly positive, but with varying degrees of confusion (from severe frustration to just-rolling-with-it) or interest in the parallel world storyline the show has introduced this season, tracking the lives of a group of familiar characters who are actually profoundly different than the castaways we know, alterna-world people who landed safely in Los Angeles instead of crashing on an Island which, in their world, is actually sunk. One of my fave Lost bloggers, a very astute and very creative fellow who goes by the handle Fishbiscuit, has posted an insightful, well-researched and somewhat mixed assessment of LA X. I encourage you to read it. I dont share his opinion, but I respect and am greatly entertained by his engagement.

Here within the halls of EW, our contingent of Lost fans had a variety of different reactions, too. Periodically through the season, Im going to be sharing their thoughts with you, so that together, we might be able to reflect back the Lost communitys varied responses to the final year of the show. Perhaps one of these fine folk speak for you. Consider:

WHITNEY PASTOREK:
The revelation of Smokey Locke was cool, the alternate-universe plane stuff a real brain-buster, and Im glad Sayids not dead. But Im not sure we needed the introduction of yet another mysterious group of people, or more fake-looking ancient architecture. If they dont come up with some answers by the end of this season, Im gone. Oh, wait.

ADAM B. VARY:
Despite all my concerns about a continuity-free reboot going into Season 6, what was most surprising and satisfying about the premiere was how completely engaged I was with the rebooted timeline after spending five seasons with these people, seeing (most of) them (mostly) back to their pre-crash selves was incredibly moving and resonant to me. And Terry OQuinns killer pimp acting kicked my keister five ways from Tuesday. But the writers really need to begin shifting gears away from answering mysteries with more mysteries. The New Big Mystery of the dual timelines is great, but the new small mysteries the Japanese dude and his superfluous translator, the dirty hot-tub and its all-important hour glass, etc. just felt tedious and unnecessary. The ground is already fecund with storytelling possibilities; theres no need to seed it with even more fertilizer.

DALTON ROSS:
My biggest problem with the Lost premiere was this: Too much Kate, not enough Locke/Fake Locke. Never really cared about Kate as a fugitive, so it was kind of a bummer to be served a heaping helping of that yawner of a storyline. Im also worried that the flash-sideways trick wont carry the same emotional resonance as the flashbacks. In the flashbacks, the present and past were linked in that we saw how events that had already transpired forged the personality of a person in the here and now. The flash sideways, however, had no such connection and was instead merely a case of now youre here; now youre there. Oh, and the underwater scene looked like bad CGI from a SyFy channel movie starring Dean Cain and a posse of serpents. Im just sayin

SEAN SMITH:
It was wonderful to see all these characters again, but an hour into the premiere, I found myself suffering from mystery-fatigue. This series has always been so brilliant about implanting new burning questions into our brains, and weve been soooooo patient, but now that were in the final season, Im ready for some f-ing answers already. So, okay, the Man in Black is the smoke monster and John Locke is really dead (and Terry OQuinn needs an Emmy, stat!), but now weve got these characters in two different locations in two different versions of reality, and we dont know why or which reality (Both? Neither?) is real, and whether Juliets really dead, or just dead on the Island. And if Sayid is alive on the Island, does that mean hes dead in Los Angeles? And why is it that no one on this series ever asks follow-up questions? These characters may be comfortable with not knowing, but Im increasingly not. Of course, Ill be sticking it out to the bitter end, but I have to say Im frustrated. We have five seasons of questions burning in our brains. Did we really need a whole set of new ones? I feel like my head needs a hug.

As for me well, you know what I think. All 8000-plus words of it. If you havent read my recap of LA X, feel free to read it now in preparation for tonights new episode. Then come right back, because as it happens, I somehow managed to miss some stuff. Can you believe that? Truth is, as much as I write about Lost each week, I can actually write even more. Yes, it is a sickness. Also, when Im blurry-eyed and blurry-minded at 3 AM, little things can slip my mind. Little things like Charlies entire storyline last week. (The shame, the shame) So beginning this week, Im going to post a list of Things Doc Missed as part of each Tuesdays Countdown To Lost PopWatch post. The title was inspired by two top-notch Lost bloggers, Vozzek (Things I Noticed) and Nikki Stafford (Things Nikki Noticed). Without further ado:

THINGS DOC MISSED: LA X

Desmonds got a wedding ring. But are Jin and Sun even husband and wife?

Sharper eyes than mine alerted me to the fact that Sideways Desmond was wearing a wedding ring on the airplane. Maybe hes living a happily ever after life with Penelope somewhere in the world. Last week in my recap, I speculated that perhaps Desmond found new love with the woman he got his sailboat fromLibby. (As expected, the DesPen/PenMond lobbyists are now calling for my censure.) As for Jin and Sun, I defer to this email I received from reader William Riedel: Doc, Nobody seems to be mentioning it, but it doesnt appear that Jin and Sun are married. You dont see a ring on either. Watch the scene with the customs again. The second customs lady asks Sun, Ms. Paik, do you speak English? Its very quick, but she uses her maiden nameThought it was interesting.

Charlies Story
I actually feel really horrible about this. Allow me to atone for that error right now, using the format I employed for the other characters:
ISLAND WORD: The ex-rocker went to Australia to talk his brother into reuniting their band Driveshaft. When he said no, Charlie got wasted on drugs and booze. On the plane, an altercation with Cindy the flight attendant caused him to flee into the bathroom and attempt the old drug-flush. Then CRASH!
SIDEWAYS WORLD: It was cool seeing Cindy, Boone (who went down under to bring Shannon back from a bad boyfriend; this time, she wouldnt go), and especially Charlie, though the Sideways circumstances were pretty grim for this particular iteration of Mr. Pace. Charlie tried to swallow his bag of H an apparent suicide attempt. His crisis gave Jack a hero moment that required him to improvise, which reminded of the early Lost stories in which the clever, unbeatable doc relied on wits and scraps to pull off life-saving procedures for his fellow castaways. Still, Sideways Charlie was embittered toward Jack for saving his life, embellishing Jacks status in castaways lives as the unwanted/pathological savior-fixer. But I would say Jack made the right call in helping Charlie. Itll be interesting to see if Jacks hard-charging hero act will play as a virtue or vice in this world.

Sayids Passport
Last week, I claimed Sayids Sideways storyline didnt appear to have any deviations from Island Sayids history. Thats not true. Sharper eyes that mine have pointed out to me that former Iraqi soldier and torturer had an Iranian passport. Id be surprised if its a continuity error. Does Sideways Sayid have a whole new nationality in the Sideways world? Might this be a fake passport for some manufactured identity hes using? Something to track.

Dogen
I neglected to mention last week that The Temples English-hating master continued Losts tradition of naming characters after notable deep thinkers. Dogen = Dogen Zenji, the 13th century Japanese Zen Buddhist master, founder of the Soto School of Zen. Im no Zen expert, but my understanding is that Dogen emphasized the practice of sitting in silent meditation. But he put even more emphasis on the idea that there should be no distinction between daily living and spiritual discipline, that they should be integrated in a kind of lifestyle/mindset of constant, moment-to-moment enlightenment seeking, or what Christians might call ceaseless prayer. In doing so, the Truth appears, there being no delusion. If you understand this, you are completely free How much of this might get reflected in the Lost matrix this season? We shall see.

A new name for Fake Locke
David Skidmore in Murfreesboro, TN writes: Please use the phrase Locke-ness Monster in your write up. Pretty please? My friends are trying to settle on a name for the Lockes beyond Flocke, Alterna-Locke, Beached Locke, etc. We have a contest going and if you validate this and give me a dash of credit it would be the checkmate I need. David, feel free to declare victory! From now on, Locke-ness monster it shall be! (But I must tip my hat to my Totally Lost pal Dan Snierson, who coined this phrase for me weeks ago.) Also a big shout out to Adam B. Varys father, from whom I am swiping dirty hot tub to label The Others polluted magic spring. Look for the new jargon to make their first appearances in my recap of What Kate Does, posting tomorrow morning.

In the meantime, if youre looking for other stuff to do in advance of Lost tonight, theres my Doc Jensen column, or the new episode of Totally Lost below, complete with guest appearances by Matthew Fox, Terry OQuinn, and Michael Emerson, whose cryptic comments about the Sideways storyline have had Lost fans buzzing all day. Check it outand come back here right after the episode to start the conversation about What Kate Does.

Lost Sayid

Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it.

Hey guys! Im gonna be live blogging the Lost season premiere when it starts very soon! Ive never live blogged before, so this is a test post, so hopefully I will be able to keep adding to it!
And we here go.
8:02. The plane! Oh, look, its flight 815. Im pretty sure Jacks hair is longer than it was. And the turbulence is over. Looks like the plane isnt going to crash after all. I approve, Juliet reset history.

8:04. Why did Jack randomly start bleeding?!!!! Omg, why is Desmond on the plane?!!! I guess, Desmond hasnt been on the island for the past three years.

8:06. The island is totally underwater!!! The four-toed statue. And possibly the worst graphics Ive ever seen. Good stuff.

8:09. Back to the previouslies white screen. Why is Kate in a tree? My tv sounds weird. Miles! Someone else is alive. Cool, back where?!

8:12. Is it season three again? The hatch blew up. The island never exploded. Reality # 2. Ooh, Sawyers mad.

8:14. Jack seems so sad! And now back to reality # 1 the plane. Kates a criminal again! Sawyer looks like such a jerk!! And Hurleys a CEO of his chicken company. And hes lucky! Whats going on?

8:16. Back to islandland Jin, Hurley, Sayid still exist. Oh course Sayid would still be bleeding to death, the guy never catches a break. Wait, Juliet??!!!

8:18. The first philosophical ramblings of the season Sayid wants to know whats gonna happen after death.

8:19. Jacob, literally, wtf is going on. You must have some answers, right?

8:22. Jins so mean! Suns so sad! Boones so hot! I miss him. Hes a fun vampire now on the CW. CAN LOCKE WALK? Why is this universe so so different?

8:24 reality # 3 the present? Shouldnt this have ceased to exist as well? Why do Locke and Ben have different lives like everyone else? Bens so sad too! And thats not what Suns hair looked like last season!

8:27 Locke is so dead! Bens confused. Richards so mad! I wish I was more capable of blogging more than one word for each character. This is too good.

8:36 So Im only gonna post at commercials because this is too much. But Charlie!!! Please dont be dead. again. I love you too much. Why is Desmond on this plane?! And what reality are we in? Can we settle in one? Are they in the present? OMG are Jin and Sun going to meet at the temple?! Why did Jacob actually die? So many questions! And seriously, Juliets cool and all, but why do people keep leaving Sayid for dead?!

8:48 Im so pleased Jack asked for a pen to save Charlie just like Boone in the pilot. Yay Boone. Was Charlie trying to kill himself? I hope not. He hasnt met Claire yet. I hope Claire shows up soon; her name was in the credits. Okay, so Fake Locke (FLocke) is really the smoke monster, who is probably also Jacobs black-wearing nemesis from the season finale. At least they answered one of my thousands of questions. That scene with Suliet was so sad! I want her to live. But shes killing aliens now (on V), so I dont think its going to work out the way I want. God, I love this show.

9:00 I dont like this universe on planeland! Locke lied to Boone about how fabulous his walkabout was. Thats so sad! And Charlies going to jail! And so is Kate! Why havent we seen Claire yet? But really on island stuff Juliet!!!! I spent 258 days thinking you were dead, and I just had to watch you die again. Lost! Dont do this to me! I cant take this much. (Sorry for all the exclamation points. Im so happy its an hour in and we still have an hour left. I love special two hour episodes!) I cant decide if I want to side with Sawyer. Technically, yes, it is Jacks fault that Juliet died because it was his plan that killed her, but she did not need to go along with it. I cant decide which universes Sawyer is more anguished. (Remember 2004!Plane!Sawyer just killed the wrong man on the quest to find his namesake. I love having so much more context now!)

9:11 Okay, Raiders of the Lost Arc. What am I watching again? What is that temple? Who are those people? Why is Christian Shepherd not on that plane? Can dead bodies not transcend reality? But Boones there. And so is Charlie. Can dead bodies only transcend reality if they were alive before the schism? (For the record, I dont know what Im talking about, either.) Im glad the plane landed safely and they got off okay, but Im so sad. My Locke isnt alive in any reality. (I take possession of Ben and Locke for some reason I have the strangest favorite characters.) I want him to walk again. Why hasnt Claire showed up yet? Oh look Juliets alive! On a commercial for V. Juliet, please come back. I dont want Sawyer to kill Jack.

9:18 Awww, Sawyers cute when he meets Kate again. I dont know why I had to interrupt my watching to say this, but its apparently very important.

9:24 Who are these people? Why is Cindy there? How does Juliet know the bomb worked? Okay. I have my initial batch of questions out. Kate is so silly, trying to get away from the marshal. Good plan though! I hope she gets away. If we continue in this reality, it would be pretty boring if she was in jail the whole time. I hope we go back to Ben soon. I need to know whats going on! Also, that wasnt a guitar. Jacobs so cool. I hope we get to see him again. Hes saving the day! Who is that Asian man? Guards of the temple? I wish this was the same temple Jacob lived in. Sun needs to show up again, and Jin needs to be there too. Theyve been too mean to these people.

9:36 So they just drowned Sayid to let him die? Hes a regular this season. I dont understand. Why does my show always do this to me?! The stuff in airportland was pretty fun. I wish Sun had spoken up that she knew English. Jin wasnt around, and its not like she loves him, anyway. Speaking of, please reunite these two people! Its killing me. I havent seen Ben in so long! Like, in 50 whole minutes. I guess thats shorter than the 8 months since Lost last aired, but still. Jack trying to save Sayid was like Charlie in that season one episode where Ethan hanged him, and I was so hoping he would have woken up. I dont think Sayids dead though. This is the method that saved little Ben last season. But is it ironic, because Sayid was the one to almost put little Ben to death in the first place? I dont know. I love Lost.

9:48 Claire! I missed you! I wonder if shes still pregnant. Are the people at the temple part of the shadow of the statue people? I dont get it! Please dont let Sayid really be dead. I dont like that my people are all prisoners now! The scene with Flocke and Ben was crazy sad. Locke is such a sad man, and now hes gone forever. Evil man is being so mean to him! And Ben is so tortured. Everyone is so tortured in this reality!

10:00 Oh my god. What the f*** just happened? That scene with Jack and Locke was crazy. Nothings irreversible. Apparently not. They just changed history. Oh I hope he can walk again! But Sayid! Hes alive! But dead is dead. I have a theory that Jacob is inhabiting Sayids body now. I dont know why, it makes sense, I swear. Whats the long showdown between Richard and FLocke? Is it because Richard is on Team Jacob? (As long as Edward Cullen doesnt show up, Im good.) I love this show. I love it. Im so confused, and so happy, and Im probably going to watch the episode again now. Yay.
