Sink On Scott Campaign, Crist Veto
Had lunch with Chief Financial OfficerAlex Sink on on a particularly newsy day in Florida politics, what with tea parties, presidential visits, high-stakes vetos, and lots of lots of speculation about Gov. Charlie Crist'sRepublican bid for the U.S. Senate.
On the out-of-the-blue campaign for governor by Republican Rick Scott: "Bring it on. I'm ready,'' said the leading Democrat in the race."He's probably tapping into what I am feeling, which is a strong sense of outrage about how politics and government are working." Asked if it's too late for Scott to get into the race, she said,"Heck no. If he's willing to spend -- pick a number -- $25 to $30 million in the race, he could very quickly become the best known candidate."
On the current Republican frontrunner, Attorney General Bill McCollum, who initially dismissed the idea of a criminalprobe into spending at the state Republican party butordered FDLE to investigate when it blew up in the press: "He waits three months to see that there's something going on and then puts it in the hands of a Cabinet agency that reports to him?'' asked Sink, who noted that the former party chairman saysMcCollum was quietly involved in the backroom negotiations over his departure. "What about this picture is he not getting?''
On Crist potentially running as an independent: "He had rather not, for sure, but he's 23 points down. If he stays in the Republican primary I think he can make up some of that, but people already seem so entrenched. It's hard to run as an independent.''
On Crist's veto of a controversial teacher pay bill: "He did the right thing. He's the old Charlie. He's one of the best gut politicians I've ever been around. He has a good ear for people, andwhen you have thousands of people responding like this, he should be listening.''

What’s Alan Watching?: Lost, "everybody Loves Hugo": Throw The.
"Whoa. Dude." -Hurley
Well, we're clearly cooking with gas at this point in the season. Desmond's return has goosed the narrative stakes in both the sideways universe and the real one, two of the three island factions have finally come together(*), stuff blew up left and right(**), Des and Locke are trying to kill each other in the two timelines, and the sideways world again was used well to bring back a character whose time on the show felt like it came to too abrupt an end in the real timeline.
(*) Albeit in an episode that saw the creation of another faction in the Richard/Ben/Miles group, since groups on "Lost" are forever picking sides and walking off, going all the way back to when Jack took half the Oceanic survivors into the caves back in season one.
(**) Albeit with explosions that continued this season's trend of unimpressive CGI work. Whatever cuts ABC's made in the show's budget the last couple of years, the digital FX department has definitely been a big victim.
My fear, though, is that it's taken us too long to get to this point.
In the early years of the show, a "Lost" episode and a "Lost" season tended to be constructed the same way: an exciting beginning, then a lot of narrative throat-cleaning, and then an exciting finish. Once Cuse and Lindelof got permission to set an end date and knew what they were moving towards, seasons 4 and 5 became much denser, both from week to week and over the course of each season. Season 6, on the other hand, has felt like a throwback, not just with the return of old characters like Charlie and Boone and, now, Libby, but with the way that we're heading into the home stretch with material that it feels the show would have been better-served to deal with sooner.
Though some of the early sideways stories were entertaining through the sheer force of personality of the actors/characters being spotlighted (Locke, Ben), there was nothing all that interesting about the sideways world itself until last week. By making Desmond aware of the wrongness of the world - and introducing other characters like Charlie and Faraday who also recognized this - we finally tied that world to the one we care about, and created some urgency to our visits to LA. But I'd have rather see this happen a few weeks into the season and not now, not only because it would have given greater purpose to some of those meandering flash-sideways stories like Jack's son or Jin's amazing adventure in the freezer, but because it feels like now that we have a sideways story arc (Desmond tries to nudge the Oceanic passengers into realizing that this world isn't right), the resolution of it is going to feel rushed.
But Cuse and Lindelof have earned some trust over these past few years. Even if I didn't love a lot of the first half of this season, I want to believe that they know just how much time they need to tell the remaining story, that even if "What Kate Does" hasn't retroactively gotten better, that we're heading towards a finish close to what a series this great deserves. Because I don't want the season to turn into one big dead end like Ilana ultimately was.(***)
(***) Even in death, Ilana amounted to little, as Arzt beat her to that particular punchline by five years. The Ajira crew ultimately added about as much to the series' larger mythos as the tailies - Richard or Jacob's ghost could have very easily explained the candidate thing with just as much detail as Ilana ever offered - and the tailies at least gave us Libby's romance with Hurley and Mr. Eko and his Jesus stick for entertainment value.
And in the meantime, Desmond's actions, as well as the resurrected Libby's awareness of her other too-brief life, gave Hurley's sideways story some juice, along with giving Jorge Garcia another chance to show he has far more to offer the series than comic relief.
In sideways world, Hurley's a man who seemingly has everything (his version of the happy ending deal all the island folk apparently got) but is incredibly lonely. In the real world, he's lost so many people while standing on the sidelines that he once again asserts himself and takes a surprising leadership role on the island. (And Jack, finally after all these years learning that he can't fix everything, seems okay with playing Hurley's sidekick for once, in a nice role reversal and good moment for the character.)
Garcia had a lot of good moments in this one, but my favorite came early on, when he tells Ilana that Libby was "murdered," and this tone of pained disbelief comes into his voice as he says the word. One of Hurley's most recognizable traits is his ability to discuss the most ridiculous events of the series in the most matter-of-fact tone, but with his delivery of that one word, Garcia makes it clear just how much this one particular event continues to rock his world, years later.
Libby's return didn't explain what she was doing in the mental hospital in the real world, and I suppose that's one mystery I can live without them explaining. But I'm hoping we'll get more of Cynthia Watros in the coming weeks, along with more Dominic Monaghan and Jeremy Davies and even Ian Somerhalder. Because if alt-Desmond's mission is to bring an end to sideways world so the real world can be saved, a bunch of people are going to have to accept that they're going to die again, and there's a lot of good material to be mined there - assuming there's both time and available actors for that.
As for the Locke/Desmond mutual attempted murder game going on in both timelines, I'm not assuming either real Des or alt-Locke are dead just yet. Desmond's fall down the electromagnetic well is one of those classic comic book-style "if you don't see a dead body, you don't have a dead character" moments, and alt-Locke is still breathing (and looking remarkably like Locke on the ground after his father threw him out the window in "The Man from Tallahassee"). I am curious, though, if alt-Desmond has a specific reason for targeting our poor, self-actualized substitute teacher - perhaps recognizing that damaging Smokey's host body in the sidways world hurts him in the real one - or if alt-Des is going more by instinct, and somehow knows in his gut that the man with John Locke's face has just tried to hurt him.
Anyway, we'll have more time to speculate on all of that once I'm working full-time again (and less sleep-deprived), so in the meantime, some other thoughts:
&bull Couple of notable guest stars this week: Samm Levine (from my beloved "Freaks and Geeks" had a brief appearance as the Mr. Cluck's employee who recognizes Hurley (and I thank the "Lost" producers for giving him more dialogue than Quentin Tarantino did in all of "Inglourious Basterds"), Bruce Davison reprises his role from season two's "Dave" as Dr. Brooks.
So the whispers were the voices of all the souls trapped on the island because of the actions they committed there while alive. On the one hand, that's not a surprising answer; on the other, that's sort of the risk Cuse and Lindelof face in giving us answers to questions like that at this late date. After six years of speculation, of course most of us are going to have come up with an idea like this to describe the whispers, just as I'm sure the identities of Adam and Eve will wind up being something that's already mentioned on Lostpedia. But by tying the answer to a character moment - Michael asking Hurley to apologize to Libby for him - the revelation merited more than a shrug.
I swear, every time a character with a gun talks about getting in an outrigger (here it was Richard), I turn into Millhouse in "The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show" whining, "When are they gonna get to the fireworks factory?!?!?!?!"
Another possible "Lost" spin-off: a game show called "How Do You Break the Ice with the Smoke Monster, Anyway?"
What did everybody else think?
Kulturblog Lost: happily Ever After
Desmonds life has not exactly been a fairy tale. But I always like Desmond-centric episodes.
Ill discuss this and other ideas from tonights episode below.
Links and miscellanea
- Long-time Lost supporter Jimmy Kimmel will host a special following the series finale of Lost.
- Think Geek has a very cool (and very geeky, of course) DHARMA Initiative alarm clock based on the Swan hatchs infamous countdown clock.
- Lost Slapdown, part 9:
Observations and speculations
- The episodes opening shot shows an eye in extreme close up, as weve seen so many times before, but this time its Desmonds eye. And hes back on the island, but he doesnt know it yet.
- Widmore shows up to tell Desmond that he was shot by Ben Linus, and that Penny and little Charlie are safe, somewhere. He also explainsprovoking a violent reaction from Desmondthat hes brought Desmond back to the island and that the island is not done with you yet, a repeat of what Eloise Hawking told Desmond in the Lamp Post Station at the end of last season.
- The action moves to the Generator Room, where dorky looking Team Widmore member complains about not being ready for the test. He has a white rabbit (a familiar Lost motif) in a cage. This particular rabbits name is Angstrom, probably a reference to Anders Jonas Angstrom, a Swedish physicist who studied, among other things, terrestrial magnetism.
- The test has to do with generating an E. M. field, an electromagnetic field. Simmons gets fried during the test, but he had the manner of a redshirt anyway, and no one seems overly concerned about Simmons, least of all Widmore.
- After Widmores men tie Desmond to a chair inside the electro-magnetic experimentation shack, one of them asks Desmond, You dont have any metal on you, do you? Keys, change? This question is repeated later in the episode before Desmond undergoes an MRI in St. Sebastian Hospital in LA-X. The shack is something like a giant, lethal MRI, in a way.
- Widmore tells Desmond that, in addition to being forcefully subjected to the electro-magnetic forces that just made Simmons look like the charred remains one typically finds in a Drivers Ed film, Desmond will later be asked to make a sacrifice. What this sacrifice is, exactly, isnt clear. My guess would be that he must give up his life with Penny and their son, Charlie.
- Widmore says, My son died here, for the sake of this island. In case you forgot (and I almost did), the son being referred to here is Daniel Faraday, son of Charles Widmore and Eloise Hawking. He also tells Desmond that unless he helps (by agreeing to make a sacrifice), Penny, your son, and everyone else will be gone, forever.
- A little later, Widmore tells Jin that Desmond is the only person I am aware of in the world who has survived a catastrophic electromagnetic event. I need to know that he can do it again. Or we all die. Apparently, Widmores plan involves setting off another purple sky incident, with Desmond at its center.
- As the experiment proceeds, we see a white out like the one we saw ending season five.
- In LA-X, and at LAX, Desmond interacts with Hurley and Claire. As Desmond tells Claire that he thinks shes having a boy, Im pretty sure we can see Cindy, the flight attendant (and, on the island, former Other and newly recruited member of the Black Team) wheeling her luggage.
- George, the driver is none other than George Minkowski, the communications officer from the freighter. Hes much more laid back in this iteration. But then, hes not suffering from fatal, island-induced nosebleeds.
- Its not terribly surprising that Desmond is working for Widmore in LA-X. Still, its somewhat jarring to see these two characters on such good terms.
- A couple of interesting items in Widmores LA-X office: first, a painting showing a set of scales balancing white stones and black stones. We saw just such a set of balances in Jacobs sea cave. Second, there is a model boat that reminds us of the Elizabeth, the sail boat that Desmond got from Libby and sailed to the island.
- In LA-X, the Widmore clan is more or less intact, with Daniel (f/k/a Faraday) Widmore working as a musician rather than a scientist. Recall that Eloise Hawking required Daniel to give up music knowing that Daniel needed to devote his life to physics and mathematics so that he could play an important role on the island, all the while knowing that his fate was to be shot and killed before her eyes.
- In Widmores office, Widmore cracks open the 60-year-old MacCutcheons scotch and pours a glass for Desmond, telling him, Nothings too good for you. This is the opposite of what Widmore tells Desmond in the episode, Flashes Before Your Eyes, where Widmore tells him that he is unworthy of drinking his whiskey because hell never be great.
- Incidentally, there really is a California Superior Court called the airport courthouse, but it looks nothing like the one where Desmond goes to collect Charlie.
- Charlies behaving strangely. We come to find out that his apparently suicidal actions have to do with some seriously existential doubt in the reality of the LA-X world. Charlie believes that in some other reality, he is in love with a beautiful, blonde lady (presumably Claire), and that when he almost died choking on his stash during the Oceanic 815 flight, he was given a glimpse of that other reality.
- I found it amusing that Charlie, when hes telling his story to Desmond, refers to Jack as a sodding idiot.
- Desmond tells Charlie, Theres always a choice, brother, which is similar to either something Not-Locke said, or something Jacob said in a recent episode (possibly both).
- When Charlie causes Desmond to drive his car into the harbor, the scene is eerily reminiscent of Charlies death scene at the Looking Glass, even before Desmond starts to hallucinate.
- Do we know the doctor who attends to Desmond after the accident?
- I liked that before Desmond is put in the MRI, he is given the button. Desmond, it seems, is doomed to be always pushing buttons.
- Jacks line, Wait, he was on our plane, and now hes here in the hospital? was kind of funny. Just a little bit.
- Charlie, running through the hospital in a patient gown because of existential panic is kind of funny, too.
- When Desmond arrives at the site of the charity event to inform Eloise Widmore that Drive Shafts bassist is not going to be able to make it, Daniel Widmore is playing Chopins Fantasie-Impromptu in C-Sharp Minor, the same musical piece that Jacks son played at his audition in Jacks LA-X flash sideways.
- Theres something about Eloise. She always seems to know so much more about whats going on than those around her. This was the case when we first saw her on Flashes Before Your Eyes (episode 3.08) and also when she instructed the Oceanic survivors on returning to the island in 316 (episode 5.06). In this episode, Eloise again seems more lucid than the other characters. She seems to be aware of the alternate timelines and the implications of Desmonds interest in Penny.
- Penny is listed on the guest list as Milton, Pennysolo. Daniel (Faraday) Widmore refers to Penny as his half-sister. So who is Milton (other than the English poet of which I wrote about a few weeks back)? Who is Pennys mother, and why has she not taken her fathers surname?
- Eloise is not at all bothered by the fact that Drive Shaft wont be attending her event. What happened, happened, she says, repeating a line used earlier this year, also the name of an episode last season.
- Eloise (Hawking) Widmore tells Desmond, Someone has clearly affected the way you see things. This is a serious problem. It is, in fact, a violation. Apparently, there are rules which govern the LA-X universe, and someonein this case, Charliehas violated those rules. Where did these rules come from? Was there some sort of deal entered into by the people who exist in LA-X?
- Eloise also gives a clue to the secret of the LA-X existence: Desmond has the one thing he wants most of all, Mr. Widmores approval. But the only reason he would want it is so that he can have Widmores blessing in marrying Penny. LA-X universe appears to be full of monkeys paw scenarios, where the characters are granted their wish, but at the cost of something dear to them. Desmond has Widmores approval, but not Penny. Sayid has Nadia safe, but cannot ever be intimate with her. Etc.
- When Eloise tells Desmond that hes not ready yet, thats a bit of a head-scratcher. Does she mean that hes not ready yet to find out about Penny? Or that hes not ready yet to understand why he cant know about Penny?
- In LA-X, Daniel still has the skinny tie, but he chooses to further accessorize it with a really dorky fedora.
- Daniel proceeds to tell Desmond about how he fell in love with Charlotte Lewis at first sight, though he doesnt name her. The museum she works at is apparently the same one for which Eloise Widmore is putting together a charity event. Daniel is also able to deduce, because of his genius, that in some other possible universe, he has already detonated a nuclear bomb. Man, wish I was that kind of smart.
- Daniel mentions that when he first sees Charlotte, shes eating a chocolate bar. She was also eating a chocolate bar when Charlotte, the child, met the crazy older man Daniel on the island in 1977.
- All of the main characters, each of the main Oceanic survivors who have had a flash sideways, plus Charlie, Daniel and Desmond in this episode, have felt the vague deja vu that signals this LA-X universe as being not-quite reality. That feeling is coming more into focus now, especially with what we learned tonight. And maybe, just maybe, it has something to do with love.
- Desmond meets Penny in the same stadium that he met Jack, only this time its Penny whos running steps. When Penny shakes his hand, he faintsand we cut to the Island, where Desmond gains consciousness. The two events appear to be inter-realted. Desmond is the only character who seems capable of these kind of intertwined flashes, as weve seen before.
- When Desmond awakens on the island following Team Widmores eletro-magnetic experiment, he seems filled with a sense of purpose, and willing to follow fate. He doesnt particularly mind if hes following Widmore or Sayidhes at peace with his fate in either event.
- No one snaps a neck like Sayid. And Black Smoke Deadened Sayid seems incapable of recognizing the irony of a man who has just murdered another man with his bare hands saying, These people are extremely dangerous.
- Desmond asks Minkowski to get the Oceanic 815 flight manifest and when Minkowski asks him why, he replies, I just need to show them something. Some antecedents would be nice. Show who what? Show the Oceanic 815 passengers something? It seems so.
I enjoyed this episode, probably more than I would have expected if someone had told me that 95% of it takes place in LA-X. Still, Id like to get back to the island and find out what Desmond will be doing there, and what Team Widmore is really up to. One way or another, were going to find out in the remaining episodes.
What did yall think of this episode? Worthy of Desmond?
